Research Information:

Study for the head and shoulders of St. George for 'The Return of St. George & the Princess'. Inscribed (not by the artist) "Return of S. George study for the head of St. EBJ". In both the finished study (1865-66, now in the British Museum) and painting (1866-67, now in the Bristol City Art Gallery), the head is shown full face, rather than slightly turned to the left. The painting was originally one of seven canvases commissioned to hang in the dining room of the artist Myles Birket Foster.
