Research Information:

This is a sketch for the final of the seven paintings illustrating 'The Story of St George' intended to decorate the dining room of the artist Myles Birket Foster, and now in Bristol City Art Gallery. The image on verso, is titled upside down. It is a study for St. George's right arm holding the sword as it rests on his right shoulder, exactly as it appears in both the completed study (1865-66, now in the British Museum) and the painting (1866-67, now in the Bristol City Art Gallery) of 'The Return of St. George & the Princess'.
