Research Information:

The subject of this drawing was taken from the legend of St Dorothea who was martyred for her faith. An angel confronts the Protonotary Theophilus with a bowl of offerings as a witness to the Dorothea's saintliness, now being in the Garden of Paradise. Burne-Jones produced two versions of the story of 'Theophilus and the Angel', both of which remain missing.
