Research Information:

This appears to be an early study in the sequence of drawings that Burne Jones produced for the watercolour 'St Theophilus and the Angel', originally titled 'St Dorothy'. The subject is taken from the legend of St Dorothea, when the Protonotary Theophilus is approached by an angel sent by Dorothea.
